ABSTRACT

Objective To analysize the temporal trends in the disease burden of major human parasitic diseases in China from 1990 to 2019, so as to provide the evidence for improving the parasitic disease control strategy in China.. Methods The disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) of malaria, intestinal nematode infections, schistosomiasis, food-borne trematodiases, cysticercosis and echinococcosis in China from 1990 to 2019 were captured from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (GBD 2019), and age- and gender-specific DALYs of parasitic diseases were estimated. The temporal trends in DALYs of malaria, intestinal nematode infections, schistosomiasis, food-borne trematodiases, cysticercosis and echinococcosis were evaluated in China from 1990 to 2019 using average annual percent change (AAPC) with Joinpoint regression analysis. Results The DALYs were 643 836.42 person-years due to food-borne trematodiases, 156 853.03 person-years due to cysticercosis, 79 764.62 person-years due to schistosomiasis, 70 989.73 person-years due to intestinal nematode infections, 4 258.61 person-years due to echinococcosis and 264.86 person-years due to malaria in China in 2019, respectively. The overall DALYs of six parasitic diseases were higher among men (546 441.93 person-years) than among women (409 525.33 person-years), and were greater among adults at ages of 14 to 65 years (684 780.84 person-years) than among children at 14 years and lower (35 437.38 person-years) and the elderly at ages of 65 years and older (235 749.04 person-years). During the period from 1990 to 2019, food-borne trematodiases were the leading cause of DALYs among the six parasitic diseases, and cysticercosis shifted from the fourth leading cause in 1990 to the second leading cause of DALYs in China in 2019, while intestinal nematode infections shifted from the second leading cause in 1990 to the fourth leading cause of DALYs in 2019. The DALYs of major human parasitic diseases appeared an overall tendency towards a decline in China from 1990 to 2019, with the fastest drop seen in DALYs due to malaria (AAPC = −19.6%, P = 0.003), followed by due to intestinal nematode infections (AAPC = −8.2%, P < 0.001) and schistosomiasis (AAPC = −3.1%, P < 0.001), and a slow decline was seen in the DALYs of food-borne trematodiases (AAPC = −1.0%, P < 0.001), while there were no significant decrease in the DALYs of echinococcosis (AAPC = −0.5%, P = 0.264) and the DALYs of cysticercosis appeared a tendency towards a rise (AAPC = 0.7%, P < 0.001). Conclusions The disease burden of major human parasitic diseases appeared an overall tendency towards a decline in China from 1990 to 2019, with a high disease burden seen due to food-borne parasitic diseases, no remarkable reduction seen in echinococcosis, and a tendency towards a rise seen in cysticercosis. It is recommended to focus on echinococcosis control, and continue to consolidate the control achievements of other major human parasitic diseases in China; meanwhile, the surveillance and prevention of food-borne parasitic diseases should be reinforced.

Females fish samples had higher (p=0.0277, p>0.05) prevalence (28.8%) than males (16.6%). Fishes of the lower reaches had highest (p=0.0029, P>0.05) prevalence (31.7%) followed by middle reaches (16.5%) while the lowest prevalence was observed in samples of fish collected from upper reaches (9.87%). Present study address that Rhabdochona spp in the intestine of snow trout has a long term relationship and call as a natural infection in cyprinids and zoonotic risk to human.

ABSTRACT

Abstract The objective of this study was to identify the occurrence of Achatina fulica in the Great Aracaju-SE Territory. This research was developed during the months of June 2016 to May 2017. The plots methodology was used for the monthly collections, following the collection time of 20 minutes per area. The mollusks were measured and soon afterwards the parasitological analysis of the mucus and faeces was performed. Molecular identification was performed to evaluate the possible presence of Angiostrongylus sp. We observed that the occurrence of A. fulica was more representative in urban areas, especially in vacant lots with the presence of litter and decomposing materials. In the specimens of A. fulica examined were male and female nematodes of the genus Rhabditis, in the research municipalities, except in Barra dos Coqueiros. No parasites of the genus Angiostrongylus were found in the mollusks examined. The influence of the presence of litter on the plots associated with the frequency of A. fulica was statistically significant. There was a correlation between the influence of rainfall and the frequency of A. fulica. A significant relationship between moisture and frequency and nematode positivity was identified. It was also observed that the larger the mollusk, the greater the chances of being infected by nematodes. Scientific knowledge about the biology of the A. fulica species associated with human intervention such as the maintenance of land and adequate sanitary measures may be important factors for a better control of this invasive mollusk.


Resumo O objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a ocorrência de A. fulica no território da Grande Aracaju, Sergipe, avaliando a infecção destes moluscos por nematódeos, a influência das condições climáticas e das características do ambiente. Esta pesquisa foi desenvolvida durante os meses de junho de 2016 a maio de 2017. Foi utilizada a metodologia de parcelas para as coletas mensais de 20 min por área, um total de 15 parcelas distribuídas em 5 municípios. Os moluscos foram mensurados e logo em seguida realizada a análise parasitológica do muco e fezes. Foi realizada a identificação molecular para avaliar a possível presença de Angiostrongylus sp. Observamos que a ocorrência de A. fulica foi mais representativa em áreas urbanas, sobretudo em terrenos baldios com a presença de lixo e materiais em decomposição. Nos exemplares de A. fulica examinados foram encontrados nematódeos do gênero Rhabditis, nos municípios da pesquisa, exceto em Barra dos Coqueiros. Não foram encontrados parasitos do gênero Angiostrongylus nos moluscos examinados. A influência da presença de lixo nas parcelas associado à frequência da A. fulica mostrou-se estatisticamente significativa. Houve correlação entre a influência da chuva e a frequência de A. fulica. Foi identificada uma relação significativa entre a umidade e a frequência e a positividade para nematódeos. Foi também observado que quanto maior o molusco, maiores são as chances deste apresentar nematódeos. O conhecimento científico a respeito da biologia da espécie A. fulica associado à intervenção humana como, a manutenção de terrenos e medidas sanitárias adequadas podem ser fatores importantes para um controle malacológico mais adequado para esta espécie invasora.

ABSTRACT

A cada período médio de 30 dias (25 a 56 dias) compreendidos entre 08 de janeiro de 1988 e 11 de maio de 1990, dois ovinos deslanados, machos, com idade entre três a seis meses de idade, livres de vermes, eram colocados para pastejar juntamente com um rebanho naturalmente infectado. Após o período de pastejo, os animais permaneciam estabulados por 14-21 dias quando eram submetidos à necropsia para coleta, contagem e identificação dos nematódeos adquiridos. Haemonchus contortus foi o nematódeo mais prevalente (80,0 por cento), seguido do Trichostrongylus spp. (T. axei e T. colubriformis) e Oxperia spp. (C. pectinata e C. punctata) presentes em 72,0 por cento dos animais examinados, Oesophagostomum radiatum e Stcoagyloides papillosus estavam presentes em 56,0 por cento e 38,0 por cento dos animais examinados, respectivamente. O número médio de H. contortus variou de 510 na estação seca a 2157 na chuvosa, sendo o número médio de larvas de quarto estágio desse nematódeo de 499 na estação chuvosa (23 por cento do total adquirido no período) e 416 na seca (81,6 por cento do total médio adquirido no período). O número médio de Trichostrongylus spp. (T. axei e T. colubriformis), Cooperia spp. (C. pectinata and C. punctata), O. columbianum e S. papillous variou de 89, 89, 17 e 5 na estação seca a 497, 109, 93 e 284 na chuvosa, respectivamente. A transmissão das várias espécies ocorreu principalmente no meado da estação chuvosa até o início da estação seca.


During each of 25-56 days periods from January 08, 1988 to May 05, 1990, two male sheep three to six month old, shown to be free of gastrointestinal nematode infection, were grazed with a flock of naturally infected sheep (tracer sheep). At the end of each grazing period, these sheep were placed on a cement floored pen and were maintained there for two to three weeks prior to necropsy and examination for gastrointestinal nematodes. Haemonchus contortus was the most prevalent nematode found (80 percent). The mean number of this nematode varied from 510, acquired during the dry season, to 2157, acquired during the rainy season. The mean number of inhibited larvae of H. contortus was 499 in the rainy season (23 percent of the total acquired in the season) and 416 in the dry season (81,6 percent of the total acquired in the season). Trichostrongylus spp. (T. axei and T. colubriformis), Cooperia spp. (C. pectinata and C. punctata), Oesophagostomum radiatum and Strongyloides papillosus occurred in 72 percent, 72 percent, 56 percent and 38 percent of the examined animais, respectively. The acquisition of nematodes by tracer sheep occurred mainly from mid-rainy to early dry season.

ABSTRACT

Objective To evaluate the current status of intestinal nematode infection in Shanghai and make recommendations for further control activities Methods Retrospective review of the control program was made based on the change of nematode prevalence in Shanghai area since the 1950s, and challenges under the current situation were analysed. Results The intervention measures included chemotherapy, health education, sanitary disposal of human excreta and safe water supply. With the control strategy, socio\|economical development and the change of farming patterns, the prevalence of intestinal nematode infection in population was reduced by 88^5%, from 62^6% in 1955 to 8^2% in 2000. Among them, ascaris infection decreased by 89^0%, from 52^1% to 6^3%, hookworm infection decreased by 99^0%, from 12^9% to 0^1%, but pinworm infection was still as high as 18^9% in 1999. Conclusion Prevalence of nematode infection in Shanghai was considerably reduced. To match it with the current socio\|economical development in the Municipality, however, more needs to be done. Sustainable control activities and surveillance are recommended.
